Professional writing has often found itself with a bad reputation. It is commonly considered to be boring and relatively unimportant while simultaneously being praised as the best alternative to meetings. I believe that the reason for this poor reputation is the lack of education surrounding professional writing. Everyone has heard of academic writing and creative writing, these are the subjects that most high schools focus on. Professional writing, however, is often discarded as being less important for most people.
This education around professional writing is what I hope to gain the most from this class. I have always been passionate about the benefits of creative writing. The appeal of individual writing styles and the freedom of expression that is born in creative writing has inspired many a notes app poet. It is exciting and almost intentionally flies in the face of most writing rules. I myself have been drawn to this form of creativity. Still, it is not going to serve me well in writing memos.
The rules of professional writing do not, however, need to be boring. The joy of writing does not need to be stifled by the idea of growing up. Even the longest of memos have the ability to entertain as well as they inform without losing the professional aspect. From this class, I hope to be able to more fully embody professionalism in my writing without letting go of that fun that it can inspire.
