SALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 28, 2022 – Local jeweler shares insights on how increased stock value of synthetic diamonds will affect consumers.
TechNavio reported this week that the stock prices for synthetic diamonds have a 7.11 percent growth rate that is projected to continue rising over the course of the year. This is due to the increased value and popularity of the lab-grown stones.
Lab-grown stones have skyrocketed in popularity over the last several years. Local jewelers have noticed this change and have started marketing young couples toward lab-grown stones specifically.
Stacey (who did not want to provide a last name), a sales representative at Fred Meyers Jeweler in Salt Lake City, stated, “Natural stones are still more popular with our older clients, but the younger generation does not care about natural stones.”
When asked about price differences she continued, “The prices are very similar. Over the last two years, we have seen the prices rise to the point that lab-grown stones cost almost identical to natural stones.”
This is likely due to the rising financial issues for young millennials. Young millennials and older gen z have shown an average income of $47,034 according to the United States Census. To put it simply, they have less money and they care more about where it goes.
Austin, another sales representative at Fred Meyers, stated, “Lab-grown diamonds have fewer impurities and often make for a prettier and more durable stone. The older generations seem to think that they are not real diamonds but the younger customers don’t seem to care.”
On top of this, a ten-year study of 150,000 millennials done by the Case Foundation shows that millennials are very concerned with social justice. This means that they care more about where the diamonds are sourced and are less tolerant of the idea of purchasing a potential blood diamond.
“When it comes to the younger clientele,” Stacey stated, “They care more about the stone than where it came from. They don’t need the diamond to have been pulled out of a mine.”
This is a benefit to these younger clients, as the lab-grown stones are almost indistinguishable from the mined stones. There is no way for anyone less than an expert to tell the difference between them.
TechNavio stated, “The physical and chemical properties of synthetic diamonds and mined diamonds are almost the same, and one cannot differentiate by touch, sight, or other physical means.”
The main way that an appraiser can tell the difference between lab-grown and mined diamonds is the inclusions. These are small imperfections that will exist in all mined stones as a natural part of the growth of the crystal. Lab-grown stones, however, are formed in a sterile environment and consequentially do not have these inclusions.
This is another reason why lab-grown stones are increasingly popular, as the reduced inclusions actually result in the diamond being stronger and less likely to break, an important factor for a stone being worn every day.
Diamonds are appraised by color and inclusions as well as size, meaning that diamonds that are more affordable will include more inclusions which will affect the strength of the stone. A lab-grown stone means that you can get a stone of the same size that has fewer inclusions.
Fewer inclusions means that even if the price difference between a lab-grown stone and a mined stone are similar, the lab-grown stone will have far higher quality. A customer could purchase the same size stone at the same price, but walk away with an objectively better stone.
Overall, it is clear that the value of lab-grown diamonds will continue to rise in popularity in the coming years. Customers can expect to see more and more displays promoting them at their local jewelers.

SALT LAKE CITY, March 2, 2022 – Local college students react to Victoria’s Secret new body positivity campaign in light of the long-standing controversy surrounding Victoria’s Secret angels.
For several years Victoria’s Secret has been under criticism for only presenting one body type. They have specifically chosen their ‘angels’ to be tall and very thin women with narrow shoulders and hips.
This body type was presented to young women as the ideal, and for many years it was the only body type that was portrayed in a positive light at all.
With this background, it came as a shock to many when Victoria’s Secret released a new line of lingerie featuring models of all types. The new Love Cloud line was a first not just for Victoria’s Secret, but for the world.
This new line included the first model with Down’s syndrome. Sofia Jirau, the 24-year-old model from Puerto Rico said that this was a “dream come true” in an interview with USA Today.
Love Cloud, with its emphasis on diversity, was released just months after Victoria’s Secret discontinued their ‘angels’ altogether, leading many to believe that it was only released to dodge the bad publicity they had been receiving.
When asked about this new campaign, Lissi, a 32-year-old student at Ensign College, stated, “I think that it is a good thing if it is a lasting change. I know a lot of people are happy to see themselves represented so if this is going to last it is good.”
Victoria’s Secret’s recent controversy has been due to accusations of the ‘angels’ campaign causing eating disorders, not just in impressionable young women, but also in their models.
Bridget Malcolm, a former angel, came forward on her personal blog saying that she developed anorexia from the impossible standards set, resulting in losing her period and having her hair fall out.
She is not the only model to have come forward about the harm that the idea of an ideal body has done to them. Today’s college students grew up with this idea being presented to them in their formative years.
We asked several of these college students about their thoughts on Love Cloud and if they trusted this new message from Victoria’s Secret. This is what they had to say.
Anna, a 19-year-old student said, “I think that because of when they timed this new campaign, they only did it to avoid backlash. If they had done it earlier I would have believed them to have positive motives, but with it happening now they just want the good press. I do not shop at Victoria’s Secret.”
Victoria, a 27-year-old student, had similar thought saying, “I think that it could be a really good thing, but only if it lasts. I think that they probably are just using this to get out of having bad publicity and if this is a one-time thing, it would actually be worse than before. I do not want them to exploit these models and communities.”
This skepticism is understandable considering the reputation of the brand and its direct contrast with the new campaign. Skepticism was not the only response to the campaign, however, some young women were happy about the new direction.
“I think that it is a positive change. I think that with Victoria’s Secret being such a popular business that it will influence others too. I think that it will help a lot of women to see themselves represented in such a good way.” Jully, a 29-year-old student stated. “I think that this will be a lasting change.”
This sentiment was shared by Shae, a 23-year-old student, who stated, “I think that the intention doesn’t matter because it is still a good thing. It is starting steps in the right direction. There is always a reason for change.”
Even the most positive reactions to the new campaign took the timing into account. While most people are happy with this new direction from Victoria’s Secret, there is still a great deal of skepticism. Only time will tell if this is a lasting change for the brand.
